Blackbird House
A contemporary family home in East Sussex, combining black zinc and natural larch with a modern interpretation of the traditional pitched roof.
Designed for energy efficiency, the house achieves Passivhaus-level performance and was completed in just nine months using SIP construction.
Gatehouse Cottages
This is a new extension to a former oast and cottage to provide new living and kitchen areas on the ground floor with a new principal bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.
The new extension gives a new outlook to the house with spectacular views to the north. Clad in oxidizing ‘corten’ steel cladding, the appearance of the traditional hipped roof is given a contemporary twist and contrasts with the tile cladding on the original building.

Based on the Sussex/Kent border, James Robson is an architect specialising in unique houses and smaller development projects.
James set up his own company in 2022, having previously been a partner at a well-known Kent firm HMY for 15 years.
With 34 years of experience as a registered architect and developer, his focus is on creative but practical solutions.
